You can literally feel the ideas buzzing in the air! Every design group has a different design and layout planned for the Whale. Though every group shares colorful imagination, Bel Floratine was thinking navy blue and white.
In fact, there is such a thing as color psychology, which is the study of the affect of color to human behavior. Every color has a specific meaning, and could potentially create an uncomfortable environment for the hard-working teachers at the Ann Richards School if chosen incorrectly. Many interior decorators are experts of color, but since we do not have a professional interior expert with us, we will have to learn what colors go best with a peaceful environment ourselves.
Next to grey, yellow is the least favored color in the world, perhaps because its official meaning is jealousy. Red is also one of the world’s least favorite colors, which means lust and negative issues at the same time. Bel Floratine suggests our color scheme to be navy blue and white. Blue has been voted the world’s popularly favorite color based on the Colour Assignment, and represents high quality. White is traditionally known for being pure, and represents happiness and sincerity. I believe any psychologist would agree the blue and white are wise color options.
Color is a science that every artist, architect, visionary, and even author must contemplate. Blue skies turn into sunsets, Van Gogh had his blue period, and the majority of the Earth is blue.
“Blue is the only color which maintains its own character in all its tones… it will always stay blue; whereas yellow is blackened in its shades, and fades away when lightened; red when darkened becomes brown, and diluted with white is no longer red, but another color – pink.” –Raoul Dufy, French Painter
We thought of this idea when we were brainstorming over our Vision Boards. Vision Boards are, in a nutshell, a place where you compile representations of anything that reminds you of what you are working on, or your planned outcome of your project. This can include fabric samples, paint swatches, magazine clippings, or articles from a newspaper. You can create a collage of these things and hang it wherever you will be able to see it constantly. The purpose of it is to help spark new ideas based off of old ideas.
Our Vision Board isn’t quite there yet. The day we were supposed to work on creating them, we ran out of materials so we weren’t able to work on them. Fortunately we were able to hang a modified Vision Board and put a few pictures and sketches up. Hopefully by nest time, it will be full of creative pictures and ideas!
In addition to brainstorming, we have been learning about the physics behind simple machines such as levers and the wheel and axle. We realized that simple machines can be found anywhere, and that many complicated machines can be made from smaller simple machines. We learned how to solve for the equilibrium (balance) in levers, and the mechanical advantage of wheels. I have a feeling we will use the Pythagorean Theorem for the inclined slope, but until then, we will be perfecting the skills be know now.
Until next time!
